A companion piece to No Direction Home, Rolling Thunder Revue adds a lightly fabulist spin to its portrait of the legendary 1975 tour that featured Bob Dylan and a revolving cast of friends and special guests hitting the road for a series of small-venue concerts, which Dylan conceived of as a kind of rock-music commedia dell’arte caravan. As in his earlier Dylan doc, Scorsese combines a treasure trove of recently unearthed archival footage (sourced primarily from Dylan’s self-directed road-movie epic Renaldo and Clara) with after-the-fact interviews — but this time out, not all the commentators are who they claim to be, and Dylan himself weaves these fabricated figures into his recollections of the tour.
