Cinema Eye, the organization that celebrates artistry and craft in nonfiction filmmaking, today announced their annual list of “The Unforgettables” – this year’s most notable and significant nonfiction film subjects.
The Cinema Eye list of Unforgettables spans the breadth of this year’s nonfiction storytelling, including popular icons Amy Winehouse (Amy) and Iris Apfel (Iris), inspiring, courageous figures like Brenda Myers-Powell (Dreamcatcher) and Adi Rukun (The Look of Silence), and a number of subjects who’ve become widely known through their appearances, including the six Angulo Brothers from The Wolfpack. In all, 20 individuals from 15 films were selected by this year’s eligible filmmakers as well as Cinema Eye’s nominations committee, which is comprised of some of the world’s top documentary film programmers and curators.
“We’re proud to recognize the deeply collaborative nature of documentary filmmaking by celebrating the subjects at the heart of some of the year’s best films.,” said Cinema Eye Founding Director AJ Schnack. “It’s especially appropriate to see that our voters have included our friend Albert Maysles and his subject Iris Apfel, since it was Al’s words about the relationship between subjects and filmmakers at Cinema Eye in 2011 that led us to create this Distinctive Honor.”
Cinema Eye produces the annual Cinema Eye Honors, the centerpiece of a week-long celebration of nonfiction film that takes place in New York each year in January. Cinema Eye remains the only international nonfiction award to recognize the whole creative team, presenting annual craft awards in directing, producing, cinematography, editing, composing, graphic design/animation as well as the notable subjects behind these films. Through “The Unforgettables,” Cinema Eye celebrates the fearlessness of this unique collaboration between filmmakers and subjects.
