After two years of establishing itself, Cinema Eye began an evolution in its third year that dramatically transformed the organization and created the bones of the Cinema Eye Honors that exists today. Year three marked Cinema Eye’s move away from Indiepix and toward being an independent organization with multiple sponsors and dozens of individuals contributing toward its success.
Moving from March to January, Cinema Eye also expanded for the first time from an one night only awards ceremony to a multi-day event celebrating the nonfiction community as well the year’s creative and artistic achievements. Sponsored by our friends at the Camden International Film Festival, our first non-awards event was a ceremony-eve Nominees Reception at the Thompson LES Hotel in New York.
Year three also saw the addition of two awards: a Spotlight Award for films that have yet to receive proper attention in North America and the Legacy Award for the classic nonfiction films that inspired today’s filmmakers.
The third edition of the Cinema Eye Awards Ceremony was held once again at the TimesCenter in Manhattan on January 15, 2010. Louie Psihoyos’ The Cove received the top award for Outstanding Feature and Agnès Varda was presented with the Outstanding Directing Award for The Beaches of Agnès. The first-ever Spotlight Award went to Jessica Oreck’s Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo and Cinema Eye presented its first Legacy Award to Ross McElwee for Sherman’s March. R.J. Cutler won the Audience Choice Prize for The September Issue. McElwee also served as a presenter at the event, along with filmmakers Peter Davis, Barbara Kopple, Albert Maysles, Bill Plympton, Amir Bar-Lev, Ellen Kuras. Esther Robinson joined AJ Schnack to co-host and co-chair the event, Nathan Truesdell joined the Cinema Eye team as producer.
